World of Warcraft warriors have three stances that they can fight in to improve their skills. Paladins, the holy warriors of Azeroth, have a similar set of capabilities called auras.
A paladin can only have 1 aura active at a time. There are 8 auras complete with a variety of different effects. Which 1 the paladin desires to use will depend upon the expectations of his group.
Some auras will be much more helpful to specific group makeups than other folks. A player who understands what every single aura does will be in a position to switch auras in an instance, raiding or soloing to maximum impact.
